Harry stared out the window in the library. He had left Portia alone in the bedchamber hours ago. He should inquire about her, but he was almost afraid to face her. Harry had been an arse earlier, but he didnât know how to handle all the feelings roiling through him. This was the last place he wanted to find himself in.
âThere you are,â a man said from behind him.
He closed his eyes and reminded himself to breathe. It was his father. He would have questions, probably a lot of them. Questions that Harry had no desire to answer. Heâd had one simple task. Escort Portia back to London, and here they were. Stranded at his fatherâs estate. At least his father seemed sober. The last time heâd been in his fatherâs company, heâd been so foxed that Harry had been disgusted with him.
âDid you think Iâd disappear?â Harry didnât turn around to face him. âI canât exactly leave yet.â
âAre you in a hurry to return?â his father asked. âWho is the lady youâre with?â
Of course, he would wonder about Portia. Who did his father think she was? âLady Portia North,â Harry answered in a monotone voice. He didnât add any inflection because he didnât want his father to read too much into it. âHer brother asked me to escort her to London. Neither of us anticipated a broken carriage wheel.â
âThis probably sounds terrible, but I am thankful for that broken wheel,â his father admitted. âIt finally brought you home.â The Marquess of Amberton was silent for a few moments. âWhy have you stayed away so long?â
There were many reasons. Most of them he didnât wish to admit to, and the others were too simple to give a full explanation. He rubbed his hands over his face. Harry didnât need this. His entire body was one big ache. He should have rested when he ordered Portia to, but heâd been too restless to even attempt it.
âI canât do this now,â he said. Harry turned to face him. âIâm exhausted.â
âAll right,â his father said. âWe can talk later.â He shuffled his feet as if he wanted to argue that point. âAbout Lady Portiaâ¦â
Harry almost groaned. His father had clear thoughts about Portia and would not let it go. He lifted a brow. âIs there a problem with Portia?â He couldnât keep the snideness out of his tone. Harry wasnât even certain he wanted to if he could.
âWhat is she to you?â His father met his gaze. âIs she more than just your friendâs sister?â
âWhat are you getting at?â Was his father suggesting that heâd made Portia his mistress? Heâd never dishonor her in that way. She was far too important to him to treat her as if she meant so little⦠He loved her. God help him, he loved her so bloody much. He had tried to avoid that, but he couldnât any longer.
His father sighed. âI only meant, do youâ¦â He waved his hands. âCare about her.â He cursed under his breath.
